Chante is not to be slept on when it comes to Sleepover!
The SA-born songstress Chante’ Carstens just released a brand new single off of her upcoming debut album ‘Rarity’ - which is out Aug 29.
Since this month is all about shining a light on incredible women and great music, it felt right to shine some of that on her.
So who is Chante? Well, she’s an R&B lover girl who first appeared back in 2023 with a few standalone singles such as Breathe, My Time and Ready. Listening back, you can hear her still settling into her sound and what it would ultimately grow into.
After those initial entries, she emerged with an gorgeous and cohesive EP titled “Transparent” the following year. Sounding more sure of herself and more honest. This project went on to be well-received and opened up all sorts of new doors for her which - drum roll please - is how we get to the story of this new album.
I might be a little iffy on the exact timing of things, but earlier this year, Chante was approached by a songwriter from the US who was working with a team on something exciting, and after stumbling onto her and listening to her music and seeing her look, they thought Chante would be the perfect fit for it.
Wasn’t long before that that she was getting ready to be spending A LOT of time in studio working on this new music over a few short months. It was a bit of a blur of things taking too long and somehow flying by too fast at the same time. She handled it with grace and passion though, and came out the other side with a gorgeous body of work to share with the rest of the world.
The first single off of this project was Animal, which was an upbeat Afropop jam that sees her devouring some poor soul through the catchy hook and melody of being downright ravenous for someone - and now you get Chante’s sweet and dangerous follow-up with Sleepover.
As the latest drop from the project, it starts to show some of the range from this album. Sleepover takes a more subtle afro pop approach, and prettier sonically, to lure the listener in like a siren. The song opes up on a bed of her vocals laying the groundwork for a steamy overnight stay.
The hook falls into such a nice pocket that you can’t help but tap along and be pulled into it. It doesn’t hurt that the with lyrics as spicy as those, she makes them dirty and classy all at the same time.
Maybe I’m biased because I got to work with her on a song that wound up making the album, but I saw how hard she worked to craft, create and perform to pull this idea off and ground it into a body of work - with a great team behind her. It’s been inspiring to see. Her combination of brains, talent, work ethic, sense of humor and beauty are all excellent things to have in your tool bag while you’re becoming a fully fledged star - and that’s what’s happening here.
Now, the real question is, are you gonna be at the Sleepover or nah?
