Mikhale Jones, Nanette and K.Keed don’t stutter with “I said what I said”
To honor Women’s Day weekend, I felt like it was only fitting to look at what’s new with women in music over here in our neck of the world - South Africa…
And I didn’t have to look far to find what I wanted to write about.
Mikhale Jones is many things. Artist, singer, dancer, writer, actor, model, content creator - she is impressive in more ways than one. We haven’t had a musical offering from her in a bit, so imagine my elation when I saw she was releasing a new song this week. She reminds us exactly why she is one of the most important voices for women in R&B and in the industry here in SA. She’s necessary.
And this time, she brought friends.
Her first single of the year is titled “I said what I said,” alongside fellow songstress Nanette and rap queen K.Keed, who was fully in her singing bag with this one and killing it in her own right!
Not only do we have an all-star female cast, but each of them brought their own incredibly unique flavor and sound to the story. The song dives into what feels like a conversation they’re having with you and it’s one that is meant to light a fire under your ass. They’re making it crystal clear who the hell they are and what they want. No mincing words or talking in riddles.
Nanette’s verse comes in to remind that peace, above all, is her priority and she will no longer tolerate being played with.
When K.Keed comes in, she shows range that she isn’t just a phenomenal writer and rapper, but that she can hold her own a singer too. Maybe I was unfamiliar with her game and she has always been a double threat, but either way, I loved it.
What makes this even more special is that Mikhale was actually diagnosed with vocal nodules earlier this year, which is scary for any singer. That’s why it is especially great that she’s making sure the R&B girlies get fed - and on that, she delivered a 3-course.
The directness of the lyrics is softened by their smooth melodies and even if this is the last song we hear from Mikhale before she takes a mini vocal break, it’s clear that she never intended to leave us empty-handed. She said what she said.
