Tame Impala’s Dracula Sinks It’s Synthy Fangs Into You
I have to admit that while I am a bit biased when it comes to Tame Impala, I think anyone who became an instant fan when they heard “The Less I Know The Better” would find something to appreciate about Kevin’s latest - DRACULA.
It’s been over 5 years since the last project and fans have been understandably excited about the rollout of Deadbeat - the upcoming album that drops Oct 17th. The third single off of the project, “Dracula” is the continuation of the rollout from previous releases “End of Summer” and “Loser.” which came out in July and early September.
The project is referred to by Parker as a "future primitive rave act," blending hypnotic minimalism with euphoric energy. "Dracula" showcases this blend by using simple, yet effective, dance production. It highlights a slight shift toward a more stripped-back approach, focusing on a strong groove over the layered, lush arrangements of his previous work. There are layers of disco in there, while also paying homage to the Australian rave/bush doof culture - a core inspiration behind the album as a whole.
The song has themes of escapism woven in - typical seen in people who seem to thrive when the sun goes down and the night comes out. A desire to escape the reality that comes with the day.
“the shadows, yeah, they keep me pretty like a movie star." is a seeming nod to how much easier it can often feel to be your truer self in the dark than it is to be yourself in the light. Parker himself describes “Dracula” as one of the defining moments of the Deadbeat era.
So if you’re in the market for a spooky and groovy new addition to your playlist for the weekend, look no further than Tame Impala’s “Dracula.”
It’ll get your blood pumping.
